In 2011, native New Yorker, college student and cyclist Jake Leary became fed up with local bike shops and went to learn basic bicycle maintenance at Time's Up. (Their free workshops and repair classes are still offered weekly in Brooklyn and Manhattan.)

He began buying broken bicycles, fixing them in his bedroom, and selling them on Craigslist. He had no bike shop experience, but would fix obvious flaws on the bikes, test ride them until he found more problems, and fine tune them.

Jake graduated college and quickly grew tired of his boring office job. He quit after a month, and was much happier when "going to work" meant traveling to a new part of Brooklyn, picking up a poorly maintained bicycle, fixing it on the street and riding it home.

The bicycles started to take over his mom's small apartment. He wanted to continue serving Manhattan without the cost of renting a Manhattan storefront, and opened The Bike Truck in 2013. Operating from a truck turned out to be a little more difficult than expected, and he soon realized that Brooklyn was becoming way cooler than Manhattan anyway. By the end of the year most customers preferred to shop for their bikes at the truck's headquarters, an old warehouse on the Greenpoint waterfront. In December 2014, the warehouse was torn down to make room for luxury condos. We found this to be a perfect excuse for TBT to become a "real" bike shop, and moved to a storefront in Cobble Hill.

Built from the ground up, The Bike Truck will not forget its humble beginnings. We pride ourselves in having the best vintage bikes in the city AND the best prices. We love bicycles and we love New York City.
