A Guide to Buying or Selling Your Bicycle

Here in New York, we love our bicycles. It is one of the most convenient forms of transportation in the city and it is also economical. With that being said, bicycle sales are big business around here and whether you are looking for a new or used bike or you are selling your old one, there are some tips you need to know.

If you are buying a new or used bicycle, look at it as an investment and treat the sale as you would if you were purchasing an automobile. Find one that is right for you, has the features you want and that has been well maintained. When buying a used bicycle, you don’t want a fixer-upper or one that has not been properly taken care of. Also, do your research. This has happened to many of us when making a purchase; we become impulsive. We find a product that we like, it draws us in and, sooner than later, we are opening our wallets and buying it before knowing anything about it. Research the product online, read some reviews and make sure you are getting a fair price. Many times, people will sell something and price it emotionally meaning that it is priced much higher than it is usually worth.

Now let’s say that you are selling your bicycle. In New York, you have a wide audience to market it to and being full of avid bicyclists, your audience usually knows what they are looking for. Be specific in your classified ad and give as much information as you can about the make and model of your bicycle. This will save you and the potential buyer a lot of time, especially if they want to take a look at it and when you meet, it isn’t what they wanted after all.

Another tip that we want to share with you is to include as many pictures of your bicycle as possible. We have all seen the ads with that one hazy picture of what looks like a bicycle. Why are we still taking bad smart phone pictures in this day and age? Most bicycle for sale sites let you post as many pictures as you want for free so take a lot. Take pictures of the bike from every angle, close-ups of the gears, brakes, tires and anything else you would want to see when purchasing a new bicycle. The more pictures, the better as this will give potential buyers a good look at the bike before they decide to see it in person.

One last tip for anyone looking to sell their bicycle, price it fairly. Overpriced bicycles will get skipped over in the ad section. Don’t underprice it, but don’t ask more than it is worth either.
